GUADALEST- Part One The Geography

So today we took a little trip to the picturesque village of Guadalest, it was much quieter tan usual due to obvious reasons but it was beautiful to have a walk and take some photos. The las time we tried to get to Guadalest we where unable to due to snow, yes you read that correctly we had to turn around due to snow.

Here is a little bit about the Geography of Guadalest

It is a small and fundamentally a tourist town. It is well known for the picturesque castle that dominates the entire Guadalest valley.

El Castell de Guadalest is made up of two parts, both which reflect it historical evolution.

On the one hand you have the historical nucleus. Known as "el castell" or "la vila" which is located in the higher part of the village, then on the other hand the urban area know as "ravali" which has developed outside of the castle.

"El castell" is located at the very top of a craggy rock, and to enter its historical centre you have to ascend a hill and cross a medieval entrance. Portal de Sant Josep is the name of the enterance to the fortress, the tunnel was excavated into the moutans rock.

Once you go through this tunnel into "el castell"/ "The Ville" which has been Declared a Site of Cultural Interest, you will find the buildings that used to represent power, For example; . Castle of San José. 11th century fortress, created by the Muslims, is located on the rock in the highest part of the municipality. It had a very important role throughout the Middle and Modern Ages, thanks to its strategic location. The earthquakes of 1644 and 1748 and the blast that suffered in 1708 in the War of Succession were to blame for its destruction.

Alcozaiba Castle. XI century fortress, created by Muslims, is located in the domain of the old Casa Orduña. Currently, only one ruined tower remains.

Orduña House. 17th century noble house located between the Parish Church and the Castle of Alcozaiba. The Casa Orduña belonged to the family of the same name, whose members were governors and trusted people of the Marquises of Guadalest. In the building, you can see furniture and decoration from the 19th century, canvases from the 18th and 19th centuries and an interesting collection of ceramics.

Prison. 12th century building located on the ground floor of the town hall.

Parish Church. Dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption. Baroque style 18th century building, attributed to José Sierra. The bell tower is built on the pinniacle of the rock. this is unusual as it is one of the few bell towers that are seperate from their church.

The municipality that is located in this valley is bordered by the highest heights in the province, and its most representative heights are: Els Parats (1,147 m), Morro Azul (1,124 m) and Morro Blanco (1,084 m).

To the north is the Sierra de la Xortà (1,126 m), to the south is the Sierra de Aitana (1,558 m) and to the west is the Sierra Serrella (1,361 m). The altitude is Approximatly 600m above sea level.

The municipality enjoys a Mediterranean-type climate, but has slightly cooler temperatures than the coast, with cooler winters and milder and more pleasant summers. These temperatures and Due the fact that Guadalest has such a rugged rugged relief means that in the highlands pine trees and scrubland are found , while citrus, olive, carob and almond trees are cultivated on the terraced slopes and in the valley, which, in spring, add a note of color to the landscape.

The Guadalest river is a main tributary to the River Algar. The Guadalest river crosses from west to southeast, collecting its waters in the gorgeous blue and turquoise reservoir of the same name. The river Guadalest id born in the port of the confides between the Aitana and the serrella mountain ranges.
