NIE- What it means and why you need one

NIE = Numero de identifcacion de extranjero

is assigned by the national police. this can be applied for by yourself or an authorised figure may apply on your behalf.


This is your forigners identity number and is needed for all legal and tax activity, such as;

- Working

- Buying or selling a property or car

- to enable social security including but not limited to healthcare (SIP)

This is also a legal requirement after 3 months in Spain.


To apply for this you will need;

1st - Your original and in date passport and photocopies

2cd - 2 small photos

3rd - EX15 form (see below) this is obtained from your nearest national police station.


4th a copy of the modelo 790 as seen below, take to a bank and the governmental tax paid aproximatly €10,80



once these two forms are completly filled in.

Take both completed forms back to the national police station along Your original and in date passport and photocopies and your 2 small photos.


wait your turn for your application to be processed and once finished you will have an A4 white sheet of paper with your full name first and surname, date of birth,city and ountry of birth and what is now your unique NIE number


your certificate should look very similar to the example one below
